Review of TuneUp Utilities Features

The new version of TuneUp Utilities 2010 is here and brings better optimization to PCs than ever before: more performance, more stability, and more customization! In the previous review of TuneUp Utilities, the computer used for the review showed quite an increase in performance just by running the utilities to increase performance. The TuneUp Utilities optimization program is packed with many more utilities to optimize and customize your PC. Let's explore some of those features.

This is a screenshot of the main interface of TuneUp Utilities and the Increase performance tab. These utilities were put to the test in the previous tutorial.

The next tab claims to be able to free up disk space and suggest some items to cleanup. I will use the recommended settings and clean this disk.

This screen shows the unnecessary files cluttering up the main drive. It has system restore checked to clean up. I do not even use system restore and that Windows feature is using 2 Gigabytes of disk space. It is recommended to use a program like Acronis True Image for imaging and creating restore points on a system. I clicked the Clean button.

TuneUp Utilities also suggested a couple Windows functions to turn off. Just by having the hibernate mode on, the system is using 1 Gigabyte of disk space. I disabled it because I do not use that Windows function. I also removed the Windows Messenger.

The next tab to explore is the Maintain Windows feature. This is where you can perform a registry cleanup, delete temporary files, defragment hard disks, and schedule all of those functions to execute on a regular basis. The hard drive was just defragged in the previous review and the temporary files were cleaned in the previous step.

These tasks are very time consuming so I scheduled them to run at a later time using the 1-Click Maintenance feature..

TuneUp Utilities allows you to solve Windows problems. The utility includes the TuneUp Disk Doctor which will check your file system for errors preventing future data loss. TuneUp also comes with a TuneUp repair Wizard to fix computer and display errors. It also has another very handy feature. TuneUp comes with an undelete program. If you have ever accidentally deleted a file, already know how important this feature is.

I wanted to see how the TuneUp Undelete utility worked so I deleted a Word document and emptied the recycle bin to see if TuneUp Undelete could recover the file.

You have the option to search for a specific deleted file.

TuneUp Undelete quickly found a Word document. The name of the document is different but I wanted to see if it was the one I had deleted so I clicked the Restore button to restore the file. The document I had deleted was named Doc1.doc. When it was restored, this was indeed the file I had deleted. This utility alone could be a lifesaver.

The next tab to explore is the Customize Windows tab. Here is where you customize many of the functions built into Windows but are so hard to find. TuneUp Utilities puts all of the controls in one place. It also allows you to customize other settings that Windows doesn't allow you to like changing the boot screen and changing the user logon screen. Impressive features!

TuneUp Utilities has more features under the Additional tools tab. The utilities include a process manager, registry editor and a TuneUp Shredder to permanently delete files from your hard drive.

TuneUp Utilities also has its own Uninstall Manager to correctly uninstall programs. The Windows uninstall program always had a lot to be desired.

Here is a shot of the TuneUp System Information utility. This utility will tell everything you ever needed to know about your computer all in one convenient package.

The TuneUp Utilities package is packed with so many features that it is hard not to recommend. This is a highly recommended utility package to have in your toolbox. TuneUp Utilities just makes every optimization, customization and computer maintenance task less of a daunting task.
