A Review of the Mozy Backup Solution

In this review of the Mozy online backup solution, a walkthrough will be done to show how easy it is to use an Internet backup solution to backup and restore your important megabytes of files. On the Mozy web site, there are a few choices of backup solutions. There is the free solution, the unlimited backup solution and the MozyPro application for business. For the sake of this review of Mozy, the Free online backup solution will be used.

Mozy introduces Stash that allows you to back up and sync your important file to multiple computers. The new Mozy also has speeded up the online backup process and touts a new easy to use interface.

The first thing you will need to do is go to the Mozy website and decide which solution is right for you and click on the Get Started button. This one is for the unlimited backup plan.

The next screen shows their soul-sucking survey where they still do not ask for too much information.

Then you will get a welcome screen that says it that Mozy needs to verify your email address. Mozy verifies your email address by sending you a link to the Mozy online backup application file that you will need to download.

Welcome to Mozy

Sure enough the email was in my 1and1 Inbox in seconds.

Once I opened the email and clicked the link. The Mozy account is created. You will notice that you can use Mozy for Windows or Macs.

The Mozy Download screen

I downloaded the file for Windows. The file is less than seven Megabytes so the download was quick. I ran the Mozy install program which was uneventful and ended up at the following screen. Of course, I wanted to launch Mozy so I smacked the finish button.

The MozyHome remote backup configuration wizard then asked me to log in with the email and password I created when I signed up for the online backup solution.

The MozyHome backup application then checks for what it thinks are important files and lets you decide whether or not to use the backup scenario that it recommends. Looks good to me so I clicked Next.

Looks like the online backup went well. Now I need to see if the restoration process goes as smooth. It is important to test a backup solution to see if it works good before a disaster strikes and you lose your data.

I have a folder in the My Documents directory called"wab". It is the folder that the What's A Byte web site is stored in.

I deleted the entire folder.

I hope that the restore works. I selected the wab directory and smacked the Restore Files button.

On a scale of Bytes to Brontobytes, Mozy online backup gets an honorable Brontobyte. The Mozy online backup service is a highly recommended online backup solution.
