HP Upline Online Backup Solution Review
It seems that HP Upline has discontinued their online backup service – quite suddenly I might add. On February 26, 2009, I received an email stating that HP will no longer be backing up your files to the HP Upline servers as of Feb 26, 2009 at 8 am Pacific time. HP will keep the file restore feature of the Upline service operational through March 31, 2009 Pacific time in order for you to download any files you have backed up to Upline. Talk about short notice! If you are currently using HP Upline as a backup service, Acronis Online Backup, Mozy and the Norton Online Backup Solution are very good alternatives to HP Upline.
If you have any comments about the recent, sudden shut down of the HP Upline Online Backup service, you can post them below.
We have been hearing some good things about the HP Upline online storage service so we figured it was time to do a review of the Upline online backup solution. The service offers unlimited online backup storage with plans to accommodate most of your backup needs. HP Upline offers one user account, a family account for up to three computers and a small business account that is expandable to 100 computers.
Upline is not just for online backup and storage. The service also allows you to share and publish data to the web. This is a great feature to use if you want to easily share all those Gigabytes of photos and videos you may have accumulated with your family and friends. You can also easily share work files with coworkers without the tedious task of trying to email them to the people you want to share with. HP Upline looks like a solid online backup solution with a few extra benefits. Here is a review of HP Upline.

Once the installation of HP Upline is complete, the Upline Configuration Wizard is launched. The Wizard helps you set up your Upline account, allowing you to share, publish, search, remotely access and backup your photos, music and other important data that you have accumulated on your hard drive.

Because the settings for online storage are kept on the storage server, you need to sign in with the username and password you chose when making the account to complete the configuration.

Now you have to name the computer that will be backed up. I named this one simply Upline Review. Choose a name that is meaningful and that will make sense if you change your hardware allowing you to identify your backups and keep track of the computer’s data if you are using multiple accounts.

This screen shows that the configuration is complete and the Upline account has been created. They recommend clicking finish to launch Upline so I did so.

Upline automatically backs up My Documents, My Favorites, and folders on the Desktop. These are called Watched folders. You can add or remove the watched folders if you so desire. For the purpose of this review of the HP Upline online backup solution, I will remove the default folders and add another very important folder to the backup list. I chose to add the WAB folder to the watched list. That is the folder that the What’s A Byte website is stored in.

I also chose to back up this folder manually for the purpose of this review. As you can see, this Upline is highly customizable.

Click on the Back Up button to start the backup.

The backup was successful. When the backup was complete, the backed up files show up green.

Now for the fun part. I deleted the WAB folder.

Once I deleted the folder, the deleted files showed up in the HP Upline program as missing files so I selected all of the files and smacked the retrieve all button. Hope this works!

The file retrieval was quick and apparently successful. The folder is indeed restored to the place of origin in its entirety.

Once the WAB folder was successfully backed up and restored, I backed up another folder called Photos with a photo of something in the folder. This to show the sharing capabilities of the HP Upline storage service. The Share button allows you to share files and folders via email. That will send an email to whoever you want to see the file or photo. You even have the option to password protect the data. I received the email successfully and the shared web space was password protected. A nice feature if you want to share sensitive data.

Another great feature of the HP Upline online backup solution is the ability to publish files directly to the web so you can share photos and other data with ease. I chose to publish the photo of something to the web.

Once you click publish, you get a URL that you can send to your fiends and family to view the photo or file.
This review of the HP Upline online backup service shows that the service is highly customizable and easy to use. The extras like the sharing and publishing abilities are bonuses to make the Upline service desirable if you want to easily share and publish data.
HP Upline was a very good Online Backup service. It is too bad they decided to suddenly shut down thier online service. They could have at least given the customers some more notice to find another Online Backup Service!
