Reasons to Dual Boot a Computer

Dual booting a computer means that you install multiple Operating Systems on the same computer. For example if you are not sure if you want to take the plunge and run Windows Vista all the time you may want to dual boot your computer with Windows Vista and Windows XP on the same computer until you are sure that you are comfortable with the new Operating System. Dual booting a computer is a relatively easy process if you use the technology and software available to get the job done fast and easy.

It is possible to install two operating systems on the same computer without the aid of third party software but the software available today makes the job so much easier. Acronis Disk Director is probably the easiest software to use to dual boot a computer. Dual booting a computer is beneficiary to you for many reasons. Whether you are an experienced geek or a novice computer user, dual booting can be very helpful in a variety of situations.

Testing New Operating Systems

Testing a new Operating System is probably the most common use for a dual boot configuration on a computer. When a new operating system first is released, there are usually many problems with compatibility issues wit hardware and software. By dual booting your existing OS with the new one you can see if it is compatible with all of your existing hardware and software without totally blowing away your existing configuration. If you were a Network Administrator or a computer technician, dual booting a computer would be especially helpful when testing the deployment of a new operating system like Windows Vista.

Testing Application Compatibility

Whether you are a home user or a Network Administrator, there are applications that may not be compatible with your computing environment. Dual booting lets you test all the applications you are using in a separate installation. One of your older games or ERP systems may not work with a new operating system and the only way to find out is to test the application in the new environment. A quick dual boot of your computer lets you make sure everything works in both environments before wiping out the old system completely.

Multiple Users

A dual boot situation is an idealistic approach to using one computer with multiple users. If you only have one computer and you need to share it with somebody else, dual booting is the perfect solution. Maybe you have to share your computer with your spouse and you don't want them to be able to see what have been doing. Possibly, you have to share your computer with your kids and you don't want to infect your system with all of the garbage they will install. Dual booting is the perfect solution.

Because You Can

This may be a good enough reason to dual boot a computer for some people. I once had four different operating systems on one computer, because I could. You may just want to show off your geek status and see how many different operating systems you can stuff into one computer.

For whatever reason you may need to dual boot a computer, Acronis Disk Director is the solution you need to make it happen. Check out our tutorial on dual booting with Acronis Disk Director to see just how easy it is to run Windows Vista and Windows XP on the same computer.

VMware Workstation 6.5

Run Multiple Operating Systems on One Computer with VMware Workstation

There are times when you may not want to run several Operating Systems on one computer but you don’t want to actually reboot your computer to get to the other OS.  The VMware Workstation helps you accomplish this task.  VMware Workstation 6.5 allows you to run multiple Operating Systems on one computer without rebooting.  It also allows you to take a snapshot, or image, of your virtual machine so you can test new software.  If that software corrupts the OS, simply revert back to the original VM.  VMware is a time saver for technicians that may need to test many applications on new and different Operating Systems.   Read more about the VMware Workstation 6.5.
