Acronis Online Backup Review

Acronis Online Backup is an application that allows you to use an online storage service for safeguarding your most important files.  In this review of Acronis Online Backup, a very important folder will be backed up and restored from the secure storage center.

Acronis Online Backup allows you to save important files to a secure remote location and recover them when the need arises. Because files are stored on a remote storage, they are protected even if your computer gets stolen or your house burns down. So the risk of data loss as a result of fire, theft, or other natural disasters is practically eliminated. If something happens to your backup image, PC, or external storage device, you can get your most important files back.

Computer Selection

If this is the first time that you are logging on to the online storage, you will be prompted to register your computer on the Acronis online storage.

To Register a Computer on the Acronis Online Storage:

Type a name for the computer (for example, My home PC) in the appropriate field you can type any name, not necessarily the computer's network name.

If you prefer storing your data on the online storage in encrypted form, click the Use encryption for enhanced protection link and then type an encryption key in the appropriate field.

Click the Register button.

After the computer connects to the Online Backup Server, set up an online backup task for this computer.

Select your computer or register a new one

Setting up an Online Backup for a New Computer

After registering a new computer on Acronis Online Storage is complete, you are offered to specify what to back up from this computer and when to do that. Clicking the appropriate link opens the What to back up window, where you can specify the files and folders you want to back up on the Online Storage.  I chose to backup a very important folder called WAB, the folder that the What’s A Byte site is stored in.  The folder size is a little over 27 Megabytes.

Select items to back up

To set an online backup schedule, click the link to edit the schedule and choose a variety of scheduling tasks to suit your needs.

Schedule the backup task

Clicking the OK button will save the online backup task you have set and take you to the main program window. The backup will run according to the set schedule.

To start backup immediately, click Update Backup Now.  I smacked the Update Backup Now button to start the backup job.

This is the backup operation in progress.  Looks like it will take about 15 minutes.

Acronis Online Backup Management

You can back up data only from the current computer. You can specify what data to back up, what data to exclude from the backup, schedule the online backup task, and recover data from the Online Storage. In addition, you can delete from the Online Storage files and folders you do not need anymore.

You can recover your data from Acronis Online Storage on any computer with a Web browser without the necessity of installing the software. Simply go to the Acronis Online Backup Web site, log in to Acronis Online Storage, select the computer from which you backed up the files you need to recover, and then download the files to your current computer.

Every time you back up the same file, Acronis True Image Home Online Backup creates versions of the file on the Online Storage. When recovering the file you will be able to select the version that you need.

Now for the fun part.  I deleted the WAB folder from my hard drive to see how the Acronis Online Backup restore feature works.  I hope it works.

Delete the backed up folder

The folder is deleted.

The folder is deleted.

To restore from the Acronis online storage, click on the Recovery tab and then choose to recover data from Online Backup.  Choose what to recover by browsing the backups you have created.  There is also a Time Scale Feature so you can restore previously backed up data from any given date.

When you choose Recover, Acronis Online Backup opens the Browse for folder dialog. By default, the original location from which the files were backed up will be selected. If necessary, you can select another folder or create a new folder for the files to be recovered to by clicking the Make New Folder button. After selecting the folder, click OK.

Select recover

The restore finished in a few minutes and when it was done it told me so.  Sure enough, the folder was restored to its original location.  Whew!

The Folder was successfully Restored

This review of Acronis Online Backup was performed through the Acronis True Image Home backup and recovery program.  See our review of True Image. Acronis Online Backup can be used as a standalone application as well but with the features of both programs integrated into one, this is truly a perfect way to keep your data safe and secure from any disaster.

As with all of the Acronis products we have reviewed, Acronis Online Backup gets an honorable Brontobyte on a scale of bytes to Brontobytes.

You can save documents, photos, music, and more from up to five PCs on one account. If a computer crashes or you lose a backup, no problem... Just log in from another computer and retrieve your files from Acronis Online Backup.

I can confirm that Acronis works fine for backing up the data. However, as soon as the backup set has a non trivial size, it's impossible to restore it. Several forum posts of angry users (including me) confirm this: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28477 and http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29031

This backup utility sounds quite impressive. Question: what happens if you lose programs or data due to virus attack---does the file restoration process simply restore your damaged file without eliminating the virus that caused the problem in the first place?? Virus can simply attack it again.

I work from home and have always used True Image to do a nightly backup of my files to an external drive. I always worried about what would happen if I lost all of my data. The Acronis Online Backup option seems to have taken that worry off of my mind. Thanks for the review!
